Something I have noticed recently surfing the web is the emerging trend of people creating websites that target high paying keywords. The idea is to optimize a site targeting the highest paying keywords and thus hope that visitors come on by and click on those ads. You always hear these stories of people getting clicks, so it’s no surprise that there are many naive webmasters who try to capitalize on such theories. Dreams of having thousands of visitors click these high paying ads and retiring to the bahamasicon has created a seemingly growing population of websites solely created for this purpose. And unfortunately, though some may experience short term success, they usually all end in failure.

Before you go out trying to find the highest paying keywords, I think first we should step back and understand where they come form. These ads tend to come from business sectors such as Mortgage and Real Estate where keyword bidding for popular terms can reach pretty high amounts. It should come as no surprise that these keywords would pay more than say those related to food or clothing, as the advertisers stand to make much more for successful conversions in these niches.

That being said, it again should come as no surprise that these keywords are incredibly competitive and very difficult to rank for. If you’re targeting a keyword like “Mortgage” for your Adsense ads, if your site is new you will probably never rank near the top in the search engines as the much larger companies with established businesses will always dominate Google’s listings. So you may have some of these higher paying ads on your site, but your site will pretty much never see the light of day rendering it completely useless.

That isn’t to say that trying to find keywords that pay higher is a lost cause, however you should have realistic expectations to how your site will rank for these words. Maybe by targeting less competitive keywords you can land on the 1st page of Google, thus driving more traffic and clicks to your Adsense Ads which could mean greater money overall.

Furthermore creating a site purely to target keywords is just not a good long term business plan. Websites that enjoy the most success are ones that have admins that are knowledgeable and passionate about the subject in which they write.
